Over the past few months I’ve been following the Little House Sew Along and making the blocks ready to create a quilt. The Sew Along was inspired by events recalled in the wonderful Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Melva Nolan of Melva Loves Scraps instigated the Little House Sew Along. Every couple of weeks she’s posted a new block, one to represent each of the books in the series.
Mainly using scraps along with a few new fat quarters I’ve made my blocks using shades of blue, red, purple and green. I went for muted shades and old fashioned prints, avoiding bright colours and modern prints, to be in keeping with the traditional block designs and the historical nature of the inspiration.

Each 6″ block is surrounded by Log Cabin strips and the blocks finish at 16″. I made a few changes along the way, including making four of the Maple Leaf blocks, one for each of the seasons, to place in each corner of my quilt top. The extra blocks give my quilt a 3 x 4 layout.
Here’s a video of me explaining the blocks and the few changes I introduced along the way…
I had enough strips of fabric left over to make a scrappy border. I wanted it to be colourful in order to draw attention to the coloured strips of the Log Cabin blocks. After a bit of fiddling about I decided to make a simplified version of the Delectable Mountains border. The flimsy measures 57″ wide by 74″ long.

And a fun picture showing a silhouette of my Dear Husband in his role of Chief Quilt Holder-Upper! I love all the seams of the flimsy showing up almost like the lead in a stained glass window.

I stitched together three pieces of leftover EcoBlend wadding so that’s ready for quilt making but I couldn’t find the right combination of leftover quilt backing materials to piece for this quilt – most of my left overs are bright prints… So, I’ll be finishing this ‘scrappy’ quilt with a brand new piece of extra wide backing 😀 Isn’t that so often the way?
Happy Stitching!
Allison 🙂

What a beautiful top! I love the four seasons of maple leafs in the borders.
Thank you! It’s been a real pleasure making this quilt top at an unpressured pace and seeing my scrap pile diminish a little!
Your Little House quilt top is beautiful, Allison! I like the way you made more maple leaf blocks to make the quilt bigger. Happy finishing!
Thank you Diann. I have enjoyed making this quilt top. Whenever I can I tend to adapt square quilts into rectangles as I find the finished shape useful for throws etc.
I love your border! It made it into a really nice size. Your colors are just beautiful, and I love the extra blocks. Nicely done!
