I’ve been spending a good proportion of my sewing time preparing for the next in a series of ‘Saturday Patchwork Workshop & Sewing Social’ days. The August Workshop is scheduled for 31st August. The details have gone live and can be found on the Workshop page of this blog. I’ve been trying out various bag patterns described as ‘suitable for beginners’. After quite a few trials and modifications, I’ve decided to base the Workshop on the Zippy Bags pattern by Sallie Tomato.
My first modified version of the Zippy Bag has one zip pocket rather than two and a ¾” rather than ½” adjustable strap. It looks ok (hard not to love that Dashwood Studio fabric 😍) but there were a few bumps (mainly involving seams) during construction and I decided to make further modifications and a second bag…
This one went together more smoothly and I managed to get my head around setting the zipper but I still found a few steps more difficult than I’d like to face as a complete beginner. So I’ve planned a few more modifications, cut out the fabrics and bought the hardware for my third version of the Zippy Bag! Watch this space….
Away from bags and back to patchwork-quilting. Yesterday I looked through the project box for my 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt. I’ve somehow managed to keep up (or catch-up) with the month-by-month block making. The colour for August is orange. Imagine my surprise when I found squares of orange fabrics lying ready and waiting in the top of my box! I recall buying a scrap pack of orange fabrics to top up my stash but have no recollection of cutting out the squares!
Now I need to make some more of the monochrome HSTs before constructing the August blocks.

Patchwork obviously has it’s roots in thrift and Katy found the perfect border fabric for her vintage quilt in the shape of a $3 cotton shirt she spied in a thrift store/charity shop.
Cathy has responded to a challenge to make a quilt using the colours of the Olympic Rings.
I really mustn’t sign up for another sew-a-long! I have two unfinished SAL projects stashed away already but Charisma’s ‘Little Pink Homestead’ project does look lovely with a wide variety of skills and techniques to put into practice. The SAL starts on 3rd September, you can find the details here.

Julie at The Crafty Quilter shares ‘How to reduce bulk in 4-at-a-time flying geese‘. Like Julie I really like to make Flying Geese using the four at a time method. I’ll definitely be employing her technique to reduce the bulk in the seams. Her comprehensive photo tutorial is easy to follow.
If perfect star points are not your thing then how’s about making some Wonky Stars? Rachel has a tutorial taking us step by step through the process – it looks like a great way to use up some more of those scraps!

Good morning Allison. I can’t find your post which included a reminder to change my machine needle, but this is to thank you because I have just given my machine a little oil and a new needle and she is purring away nicely now!
