Over the past few weeks I’ve been sharing skills, teaching a Beginners Patchwork & Quilting Course. It’s very satisfying to  see absolute beginners creating their first patchwork 😊

I designed the course to work step-by-step through the process of creating a patchwork quilt by making an Ohio Star table runner. I’ve scheduled a repeat Course for the end of April – details on my Workshop page.

I’ve also scheduled a mini-workshop and sewing social on Saturday 17th February. It’s a bit short notice but I’m hoping some local patchwork quilters will sign up. I know there are plenty of patchworkers looking to meet up with other enthusiasts. I’m going to teach making Rail Fence blocks using the quick strip piecing method. Here are my first set of test blocks, made from stash yardage – the geometric print is leftover extra wide backing fabric. I need to write the pattern…. (something else to SHARE 😊).

There’s been a bit of time to work on personal projects. I finished stitching the binding to the Jungle Luxe quilt, I’ll share the finish properly later in the week. And I’ve constructed the Modern HST Sampler blocks into a quilt. Yesterday I set about piecing a backing and preparing the quilt sandwich.

This coming week I’d like to put together the Rail Fence quilt top alongside writing the pattern and finding more local patchworkers to join the Workshop & Sewing Social.

As I’ve been reading blog posts more words of the year have been revealed. I admire Cathy’s gutsy choice for 2024: Celebrate. She’s had two very difficult years but has continued to finish UFO quilts for charity throughout all the upheavals she and her family have had to face.

Bernie has brought a positive ‘can do’ attitude to trying out a fmq design for the first time. She’s also been experimenting with spray basting and using minky (fleece) as backing fabric.

Don’t we just love a quilt with a story to tell? JanineMarie could dine out for several years to come on the tale of the quilt she made for her Great Nephew! From the pattern inspiration to the change of colour half way through there is quite a lot to learn about this quilt!

Lots of new Quilt-A-Longs are now underway. For many of them it’s not too late to jump in and follow along. Amira has complied a list of eight QALs she’s interested in joining.

Rachel’s Positivity 2024 BOM offers intermediate level patchwork quilters the opportunity to learn and practice techniques such as foundation paper piecing, strip piecing and stitching y-seams. Rachel always has great advice on colour and fabric selection too. Sign ups for the Positivity BOM are open ’til the end of March.

Laura’s jar grippers are such a simple and practical solution to that frustrating problem of not being able to twist a lid off a jar. These would make practical, quick to make gifts. Check out Laura’s Fabric Jar Grippers blog tutorial for all the details.

Ahh! That old chestnut, the scant ¼” seam. I don’t think it’s possible to find a more comprehensive or readable blog post on the subject than the one Amy Smart has published.
