In June I saw Jenny Doan’s contribution to the MSQC Fence Rail Triple Play episode and I decided to jump in and have a go myself. I don’t keep 2½” strip rolls in my fabric stash so I did a little trawl on the internet and found two rolls of 20 strips at Pelenna Patchworks.

For the background fabric I searched through my stash and found two mottled yellow blender fabrics that would work together OK in a scrappy style patchwork. I worked out the two pieces weren’t large enough to complete the quilt exactly as seen on the video…. When do I ever follow a pattern exactly? The finished MSCQ Fancy Fence Rail quilt measures 69″ x 75″ with the centre Fence Rail blocks in a 6×7 layout. My modified version measures 63″ x 69″ with the centre Fence Rail blocks in a 5×6 layout (30 Blocks in total).
The MSQC design has three borders. I added an extra border to my version. I really enjoyed making the patchwork borders. The on-point blocks were easy to make as the yellow triangles are larger than the aqua squares so there’s no danger of loosing the points.
I echo quilted a wavy line diagonally across the quilt – thinking of the gentle ripples of the sea running onto a sandy beach (we can dream 😉 ).
The backing fabric is an extra wide by Nutex.
Recently I’ve been a bit lazy about making quilt labels but I did make an effort this time, stitching the label into the binding and then hand stitching the long edges to the quilt back.
I really did finish this quilt in July. There’s one photo of it in a Saturday Quilting Bring & Share post. I think the quilt deserves a blog post of it’s very own though – it’s good to celebrate a completed project isn’t it? And I am very pleased with the way this quilt turned out 🙂

Thank you! I modified the size of MSQC pattern but followed the instructions for the pieced borders – I’d definitely think of using them again in future projects.

Thank you Linda. Finishing a whole quilt within a month is very unusual for me too! I often stall and have to give myself time to think through each stage. Following someone else’s pattern (more or less!) and using jelly rolls definitely reduced the thinking time!
