Yeah! I’ve made the first cuts into my four Painter’s Palette solids: Espresso, Burnt Sienna, Wasabi and Golden Rod. I purchased these before Christmas, when Yvonne aka Quilting Jet Girl sent out the Diatom QAL Planning email.
I took my time making the Amish Star block, concentrating on achieving consistent quarter inch seams and not losing the points of the stars in the seams. I’m pleased with the result.
It’s a big block, measuring 18½” unfinished, which suits me, I’m definitely not into fiddly-twiddly mini block making 😀 So far the Painter’s Palette fabrics are to my liking. I pre-washed all of them; there was only the very tiniest amount of dye visible on the Color Catchers. The fabrics have retained a slight sheen after washing, feel soft to the touch and there’s minimal fraying, all big ticks from me.
Working with just four fabrics, all of them solid colours (plain) does feel a bit odd, especially making the switch from the mass of vibrant prints I was cutting and stitching for the Beginners Quilt just a few days ago. Despite taking this meander away from my UFO/WIPs I have managed to combine making the block with tidying my sewing room and finishing one of the UFOs – more of that tomorrow 😉

Those are pretty colors for this QAL and a beautiful first block! All those HSTs can get very fiddly, so it would be nice to have them in a bigger block. Thanks for commenting on my post yesterday – I appreciate it!
