Patchwork Star Runner – Autumn II

by | Nov 8, 2017 | Colour, Inspiration, Learn, Quilt Design, Tablerunners, Venture | 6 comments

I am making the sixth version of my ‘Patchwork Star Runner’! I’m using this one as my demonstration piece for a two part workshop at Purple Stitches.
Inspired by the beautiful Autumnal colours all around us, I had fun rifling through my boxes of gold, green and orange scraps.

(The statue is of Jane Austen, it is in Market Place outside the Willis Museum, Basingstoke – find out more about the statue and Jane’s close association with my home town here).
Fabrics picked for Star Runner - New Every Morning Patchwork & Quilting
I didn’t use all of the fabrics I picked out. Some of the orange and gold shades kinda crossed from one colour pile to the next in the process of cutting out and piecing 🙂 I’ve recently invested in a colour wheel, using it more as a point of interest than for actually picking fabrics but I think I will use it more diligently in the future to help me sort fabrics into colour groups.

Anyhow, I’m pleased with the result. I finished piecing the top after Part One of the workshop, held last Saturday. It’s a great little pattern for getting to grips with different methods of making half square triangles and then trimming and piecing them (even if I do say so myself!). The four participants looked a bit aghast when I gave them their homework: to complete the tops of their runners in readiness for Part Two when we can sandwich, quilt and bind/use no bind method to complete our runners! (I’m a ruthless taskmaster!)
Here are the other five versions of the pattern I have made, all the colourways were inspired by the seasons:

A photo of my latest version has pride of place as my first ever post on Instagram. I am going by the unimaginative but accurate identity of allisonreid.neweverymorning and I’m looking forward to meeting up with lots of you over on Instagram 🙂

    Hi Allison,
I love the colors and fabrics in your latest Patchwork Star Runner. You find this odd, but I cannot see the star shape in this last version, but can easily see it in the earlier ones. Maybe because the separate pieces are not yet together . . . I don’t know. I actually visually compared it to the Christmas version, and can see it then. Anyhow – very lovely. I love all the colors involved. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks for your comments Roseanne. It is amazing how colours and fabric patterns can change the look of a patchwork pattern. Perhaps when I’ve quilted the runner the star will be more prominent.
