Here in the UK or weather continues to dominate our thoughts and actions. In the past week we’ve been soaked, had thunder storms followed by air frosts but next week it’s all change again, with warm, dry weather – a return to Summer! All very strange! The sudden drop in temperature has brought an end to the green bean and courgette crops. We dug up the onions before the heavy rain, they are drying on a rack in the shed. This weekend we will tidy the allotment and harvest a few more cobs of sweetcorn. Although I haven’t had much time to sew I’ve been enjoying reading lots of Autumnal themed blog posts: so many beautiful fabrics and designs full of saturated colour. Definitely my favourite seasonal palette.
In keeping with the season of saturated colours I treated myself to a fat quarter bundle of fabrics with a fruit theme.
I’m intending to use these to create a quilt inspired by my plans to run a QAL. My idea is to combine in-person workshops with on-line patterns and tutorials so, whether you are local or not, you will be able to join in. This QAL is all about choice, both in the size and number of blocks made and in the final size and layout of the quilt. There’ll be a pattern for a traditional looking sampler quilt as well as a layout for a ‘wilder’ puzzle quilt. Some years ago I made a Puzzle Quilt.
It was an experiment, an opportunity to make lots of different patchwork blocks, to play with colour and to get to grips with quilt math! I’m hoping this QAL I’m planning with several options will appeal to new and experienced patchwork-quilters alike.

Riley Blake Designs have a free QAL planned for the Autumn called ‘From Our House’. It’s to promote a new range of fabrics but stash fabrics would do just fine I’m sure. The pattern is a Log Cabin quilt with a twist. The twist being a different mini-block in the centre of each block rather than the usual plain square. Tutorials for the mini-blocks are scheduled weekly from 4th October.
I enjoyed reading Melva’s musings on the give and take of a long marriage written as part of her QAL, Pieces of My Life. It’s good to reflect on your own experiences and have a smile as you read how others have adapted their relationships over the years.
