Well! Dull, grey rainy days do have a silver lining! Namely: the outdoor conditions are ideal for cracking on with sewing room projects 🙂 Although not so good for photographing said projects, but I’ve done my best in the poor lighting circumstances…

I am really pleased to have these blocks out of the box and transformed into a quilt. I’ve called my asymmetrical layout ‘staggered sashing’. Here’s a link to a FREE PDF Staggered Sashing download I’ve written if you’d like some guidance producing a similar layout for a quilt top.

Citrus Modern HST Quilt Details:

• Blocks made whilst following the Modern HST QAL way back in 2016.
• Fabrics mainly from a Moda collection, purchased from Pelenna Patchworks.

• Sashing fabric, a blue on white text print, and rainbow stripe binding recently purchased from Purple Stitches.

• Backing: wide backing from Purple Stitches with additional pieces of the original fabrics and the sashing fabric.

• Quilting: Walking foot 2″ wavy grid using 50wt Aurifil 1135. Click to my recent tutorial for a quick overview of quilting a wavy grid.
• Finished size: 58″ x 70″.

Layout Design: ‘Staggered Sashing’

I’m sure it’s been done before by someone… But the asymmetrical arrangement of the sashing came to me as I pondered how to stitch the blocks together into a quilt top. I decided I wanted the blocks to be separated out so they could be seen as individual squares but I didn’t want to add-in too much sashing fabric as the quilt would become quite large (my limit for enjoyable quilting is around 70″ x 80″ max). I’m calling the sashing arrangement ‘Staggered Sashing’. I received a query from Karen asking for a link to a pattern for this style of sashing. As I didn’t use a pattern, I’ve produced a simple guide to show how I constructed the quilt top. The Modern HST blocks were 12½” unfinished but the layout guide can be used for any sized blocks, just adjust the measurements and the width of the sashing to suit the patchwork blocks being used.
