The week has ticked by more smoothly than I could have hoped. My DH has been on a six day working trip abroad. He’s been in a place where it’s unwise for international visitors to venture out of the confines of the hotel and workplace so that’s been a bit of an anxiety. Glad to report he is now home, safe and sound. I’m OK doing ‘home alone’ for a short while. I find talking to myself as I do the chores quickly becomes a habit! I was anxious about the possibility of encountering one of the large spiders that visit the house at this time of year (my Dad assures me they are not man-eaters!). But they sure are big and they do move fast! Thankfully I didn’t catch a glimpse of an eight-legged house invader!

What with walking to and from work and doing a few extra chores I haven’t had so many opportunities to disappear into the sewing room. However I did finish the little Hexie Quilt.

It measures 33″ x 34½”. It was an experiment really – trying out a hexagon template bought with a magazine. The hexagons are cut from the squares of a Moda charm pack boosted by a few extras from my stash. I enjoyed figuring out the cutting of the background fabric using an equilateral triangle ruler. I didn’t try over hard to match seams as I pieced the patchwork but nevertheless it all came together pretty well.

My design wall is given over to the first few blocks of my version of the Fall Foliage quilt design by Krista Moser. Inspired by the official start of the QAL I stitched together the pieces of my third block and also cut and pieced the fourth block. The third is successful, the fourth I’m not so sure about…

There’s not enough contrast between the floral fabric and the darker tones of the ombre background fabric. Hmm! I think I will put this block to one side, it may have to be dismantled if fabric quantities get tight or I may salvage it to use as half leaf blocks down the edges of the quilt…

Another ingenious way to use up every last scrap of fabric!  Linda has pieced fabric crumbs to make new fabric and then created a beautiful quilt using curved piecing with a black & white stripe fabric in the background to tie all those little crumbs together.

Yvonne Fuch’s has a systematic way of progressing through the quilting of her projects. In her blog post Yvonne documents her meticulous working of the ‘first pass’ of quilting her latest quilt design and along the way shares lots of handy quilting tips – including how to flatten out puffy areas created by quilting.

I am so tempted by Rachel’s ‘Starbright Stars Quilt’ pattern. It uses diamonds and triangles to create six-point stars with no Y-seams. Rachel has made several Starbright quilts experimenting with monochromatic and themed colour schemes. Of course, my favourite is the Autumn themed quilt – my favourite colour palette!

A smaller scale project with an Autumnal theme is the pillow pattern and tutorial shared by Irina at Nordic Crafter.

If Autumn is not your favourite season or you are enjoying the start of Summer in the southern Hemisphere then you may be more drawn to Allison Harris’ new pattern ‘Daisy’. The big 18″ blocks are an ideal way to show off fabrics and get a quilt top made in double quick time.

Mari’s baby quilt is so bright and cuddly. The wavy line crosshatch quilting creates a wonderful texture that just cries out ‘touch me!’.
