This week we’ve enjoyed seasonal average temperatures in the low to mid 20s. We even had a few rain showers – not enough to refill our water butt, enough to give us hope and one evening away from the watering cans. Here, on my blog, I’ve shared a couple of quilt finishes and my on-going learning prompted by the #30DaysofimprovQAL (more of that in the links below).

On the sewing front, I’ve reached deep into the back of the UFO Cupboard of Shame to retrieve a Friendship Braid quilt top made from a Moda Jelly Roll using a pattern by Pam & Nicky Lintott. I can remember piecing the quilt top at a little table positioned under our sitting room window, so well before the guest/sewing room building project was completed in late 2015. Sure enough, after a quick check through the archives of this blog, I found a post about making the quilt – dated May 2015. In the post I admit to having bought the Jelly Roll in 2011! Anyhow! Here we are in 2022. I’ve pieced a backing for the quilt using a large piece of left over fabric from the broad borders and I’ve teamed the top and backing with Bosal 80/20 wadding. Yesterday I completed pin basting the quilt sandwich so it’s all ready to quilt. I’m going for a quick(ish), uncomplicated finish, my plan is to quilt a wavy grid using a walking foot… My reasoning being that the quilt is quite large to manipulate and an elaborate quilting pattern will get lost in the prints and patchwork pattern.

We have quite a few happy family events going on through the coming week. The quilting will have to fit round those and the backdrop of watering the garden and allotment.

Staying on the topic of preparing to quilt… Amy Smart has updated her blog post, ‘How to Choose Batting for a Quilt‘. A useful reference post.

Doh! What have I said about August being my month for finishing quilts and NOT starting new projects? I’m so tempted by Amy Smart’s ‘Pixelated Heart’ post…. After all it would be a great stash buster 😉

Julie has created a new quilt block, she’s named it the Vinca Quilt block. She has kindly written out the instructions for making the Vinca Block in a blog post – there’s cutting instructions for yardage or Charm Squares. Just three of the blocks would make a lovely table runner. Julie shows mock ups of the blocks made into a quilt – one with sashing, the other without.
