During July I taught two new workshops. The first was all about learning and practising the process of patchwork Bargello, the second was all about quick piecing techniques using my I-Spy Shadow quilt pattern.

The Bargello workshop used variations of one of my patterns to make a runner approximately 14″ x 30″. I had enough similar strips from a jelly roll of Batik fabrics to make three of the runners. (There’s a free Bargello pattern to download here).

Stitched together these made a quilt top measuring 42″ x 30″. Partly to increase the size of the top and partly to contain all those open ended seams I opted to add a border. I was so happy to find the bright green-blue Conservatory fabric.

I splashed out and bought 1.25m to allow for the directional print. So glad I did, the border fabric really enhances the saturated colours of the Batiks.

I pieced a backing using more of the Conservatory print and a black on white text print. I kept the quilting fairly simple, using a walking foot to stitch out a wavy line grid in a bright turquoise Aurifil 50wt thread, 5005. For the binding I used Navy from the Kona Solid range.

The I-Spy quilt came together nice and quickly.

I used an extra wide backing complimented with a candy stripe fabric for the binding. Very happy with how these work with the multicoloured novelty print squares.

For the quilting I stitched an echoed arc from the top left corner of the quilt using a light green Aurifil 40wt thread, 2902. The finished quilt measures 42″ x 50″. The quilt is available to purchase from my Folksy shop.

It is very satisfying to have finished both of the quilts before they could be classified as UFOs!
