I am so pleased to announce a FINISH! The log cabin quilt started in January was completed yesterday; binding, label and all! This was a project begun using the optimistically titled book, ‘Make a Quilt in a Day log cabin pattern’ by Eleanor Burns.
The blocks are set in a ‘whirligig’ pattern and I quilted it using a continuous spiral. The quilt measures about 68″ square.
Thankfully, I persuaded my husband and #3 child to help me with a photo shoot yesterday evening as today has seen a massive change in the weather – the rain is bucketing down! This is good news for the plants in our dry garden but not good news for the brick layers out the front!
We are in to the second week of having an extension built on to the front of our house. It’s been exciting watching progress and I have drawn a rather whimsical parallel between the methods of the workmen and the creation of a patchwork quilt! Please indulge me… We’ve seen the builders work very hard at digging out deep trenches to accommodate the footings; then begin the process of filling in the trenches with concrete, breeze block footings and then back-filling using lumps of old concrete, bricks, stones etc from the spoil heap before smoothing the whole lot over with more concrete! This reminds me very much of the process of piecing a quilt: that initial stack of fabric being cut into pieces, rearranged and then joined up again to create another piece of fabric! 😀

Thanks Melanie! I really enjoyed using a ‘traditional’ colourway – the darker fabrics are William Morris prints – with the red ‘hearth’ centre squares.

I think it would be a long day with no distractions and someone else preparing the meals and even then I wouldn’t have finished the quilting!

Thanks I do really like that log cabin quilt. It is impossible to do all the things we’d love to do isn’t it? I’ve got too many ufo’s waiting for some love and attention!
