A link into the world of patchwork and quilting

info@patchwork-quilting.co.uk

Ooo! It’s been a secret project for many months: a commission from Sue to design and make a quillow for her sister and soon to be born niece. Our colour schemes and patterns underwent a couple of dramatic changes before Sue, undaunted by the huge number of patterns and colour combinations thrown up by a google search, managed to find fabrics along with patchwork blocks and quilting patterns. I think Sue did well not to be completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of options thrown up by a Google search! She picked her favourites from a range of Moda fabrics called Hi-De-Ho.
I ordered the fabrics from Kalquilts. When the parcel arrived I dived into the world of Facebook video to record the unpacking of the fabrics. (This definitely counts as one of my VENTURES* for 2017!).

(Oh! Boy! That is a bit cringe-worthy but I’m VENTURING and that means experiencing and sharing the unpolished and disastrous along with the successes!)
The secret stitching began 🙂 Sue liked the Rail Fence patchwork block so I designed a quilt top using this simple block along with five other traditional blocks.

Sue's Quillow - Allison Reid, New Every Morning Patchwork and Quilting

My final design for the quillow top

The individual rail fence blocks were 6″ square and the large blocks 12″ square. The finished quilt top measured 48″ by 60″.

Sue liked bold quilting patterns. I quilted in the ditch around and across the 12″ blocks and then concentrated on Sue’s suggestion of circles for the rest of the quilt. I used a dinner plate as a template and centred it over four rail fence blocks at a time. I did think about using the walking foot to stitch the circles but decided that the quilt was just too big to be turned under the walking foot. I took a deep breath and put the free motion foot on instead. I was pleased with the results 🙂

Sue asked for the pinwheel block to be repeated on the front of the quillow pocket. I was running a bit low on one or two of the fabrics by then (I discovered five 12″ blocks use up nearly a whole metre of fabric!) so had to incorporate a couple of the patterned fabrics into the pocket but kept to the colour scheme.
Phew! I was pleased to have the quillow finished in time for it to be gifted at the baby shower and Sue sent some photos of her sister receiving the quilt. I hope she can make good use of the cushion and quilt once baby arrives. With such open quilting patterns the quilt certainly felt comfortably squishy so might be a cosy addition to night time feeds.
*VENTURE – is my chosen word for 2017. I haven’t mentioned it too often but I have been stepping out, experimenting with new techniques and developing skills and just trying new things like recording a Facebook video! ‘Tis the season for annual reviews so I am collecting my thoughts on a year of VENTURING ready to write them down, anticipating the word(s) for 2018 will emerge during the process.
Linking with Amanda Jean for Finish It Up Friday (two weeks in a row!). Amanda Jean has a lovely quilt finish of her own to share 🙂

Love the quilt. The pattern, fabric choices and quilting all come together for a lovely quilt. I know it will be well loved and used.
