Saturday Quilting Bring & Share (28)

It’s Saturday, the perfect day for Saturday Quilting Bring & Share 😀 Bring along your project to our virtual sewing day and share in the conversations going on in the quilty community around the world. Add to the conversation by using the comment box at the bottom of this post. I’d love to hear from you 🙂

I’ve actually managed to finish a project this week – ring the bells and send the ticker tape flying! Being at home all week, waiting on visitors to my little part of Hampshire Open Studios, has given me the perfect opportunity to sew.

I added a button to the centre of each block.

I’m pleased with this wall hanging. It’s good to have used some of the Chocolatier test blocks. I work with plenty of modern prints but I do feel like I’m coming home when I get to use the deeper shades of Civil War type reproduction fabrics. They do appeal to me, maybe because my go-to colour palette is Autumn? I guess the fabrics have never really gone out of fashion, but they are not so often seen on the covers of magazines or used for the sample quilts in new books. But I did see on Facebook a new fabric range by Missie Carpenter called ‘Ginger and Spice‘ that has those muted shades I love with a modern design twist in the prints. I do hope these will be available in the UK…

Into the Woods binding by Allison ReidWith a finish fresh off the sewing table I am going to work on bringing another project to a close. I have the binding to attach to my latest design ‘Into the Woods’ and a bit of fancy stitching to add to the crazy patchwork panels.

I am slowly but surely catching up with reading blog posts – only 68 behind now 🙂 Here are the conversations that have caught my eye over the past two weeks:

I think I may have a problem – I keep getting too excited by quilting rulers! In her weekly newsletter Angie, the Gnome Angel, hi-lighted the Fussy-Cut ruler by Marti Mitchell. I hardly ever fussy cut fabrics but even so I found myself thinking what a fabulously useful ruler this would be! So all you fussy cutters out their this is the ruler for you! 🙂

He! He! I’ve just read Cherry’s post on the Creative Spaces blog hop. Her peg-board wall is covered in rulers, tools and notions. The photos in Cherry’s post have given me new perspective on my own ‘problem with rulers’ – although maybe I should be taking it as a warning rather than feeling reassured?!!!

Christa Watson showcases her latest pattern called ‘Surplus Strips’ in warm and cool colourways. Her inspiration – a geometric hotel carpet! There really are patchwork patterns everywhere!

Suzy tackles another of our fears: inserting zips with this detailed photo tutorial, making a quilted zipper pouch.

Do you stick to quilt shop quality cotton fabrics or do you go hunting for cotton fabrics from all sorts of stores? Bella was challenged to experiment with different cotton fabrics. She made several versions of her patchwork block to compare how the fabrics shaped up and was left in no doubt about her choice of fabrics in the future. Read her experiences here.

I love finishing quilts! I achieve finishes so rarely that even making and stitching down many metres of binding doesn’t dampen my mood. Yvonne shares the low-down on several different types of binding, alternatives to binding and lots of tips to make the final stage of making a quilt a pleasure not a chore 🙂

Last week I wrote about perspective following the death of an elderly friend. Catching up on blog posts I discovered that Leanne, the Devoted Quilter, had written a post some days before mine was published on the subject of perspective.

Nancy sparked an interesting discussion on her blog ‘Joy for Grace’ when she posted about the ups and downs of purchasing fabrics on line.

Well! That’s enough conversation to make a sewing day very sociable! Linking with Myra for Finished or Not Friday.

Happy stitching.

PS. Don’t forget to click the follow button on this new website – I am winding down my original website, it will be closing in the Autumn!

    • You are welcome Nancy! I am sticking Command hooks all over the place at the moment to display my quilts in the Open Studios scheme so the wall hanging had it’s own hook and was on display within an hour of the final stitch being secured!
