August is upon us! School’s out in the UK for a six week break, the holiday season is in full swing, lots of regular activities are taking a break. So, theoretically, there should be more time to devote to sewing πŸ™‚Β  I’ve decided August is going to be my month of finishes.

First out of the Work In Progress pile are the Square in a Square quilt tops. The centres are made from Moda Mirabella fabrics. I added a salmon pink border to one and a mossy green to the other.

With finishes in mind I spent a day earlier this week piecing backings for the two quilt tops. I’d allowed myself the morning but found I needed much more time to audition fabrics and crawl around on the sitting room floor figuring out how to put the pieces together before trotting down the hall to the sewing room to stitch all those long seams together…

I tried to use up some of the left over Mirabella fabrics and also included a blank square in each backing to serve as labels.

The binding for each quilt is already made and I cut out the wadding as soon as I completed the backings so in the words of NASA ‘We are good to go!’ I’m joining the One Monthly Goal August Link-up at Elm Street Quilts with the stated aim of completing both of these quilts – writing the labels, making quilt sandwiches, quilting and stitching down the bindings of both before the end of August :-O

Here are a few links into the Worldwide Quilting Community (you might also like to try #festivalofquilts2019 on Instagram if you are looking for even more inspiration):

Making a small quilt is a great opportunity to try out new techniques. Lori has delved into her stash of Fat Quarter Packs and made a baby quilt. She also had a first try at machine stitching binding down – looks really neat πŸ™‚

And Alyce is excited to give the heads up on her soon to be published book called ‘Mini Masterpieces’. Alyce aimed to design 12 quilts that allow beginner and more experienced patchwork quilters the opportunity to try new techniques without committing to making full sized quilts. In her blog post she shares several beautiful photographs of the mini quilts. All very tempting!

Shannon gives a fascinating insight into the history of Shibori using indigo dye.

Melva has been working on some old quilts and pondering the difference between repairing and restoring. It’s an interesting read with some helpful tips if you are faced with the dilemma of a shredded binding or a fabric tear.

July’s Favourite Finish Monthly Linkup is live on Cheryl’s Meadow Mist Designs site until 4th August. It’s a great place to view the huge variety of finishes shared by bloggers over the past month.

Happy Stitching!

Allison

  1. The fabrics and colors in your squares quilts are great, and the two different borders give them such different looks. Best of luck on your finishes. Thanks so much for the idea of adding a blank square to the backing for a label. It’s so simple, and yet I never thought of it!
