An Accidental Quilt!

A quick trip to my local branch of Hobbycraft led to the unintended purchase (yes! I know, it’s not the first time this has happened!) of a fat quarter pack – sigh!  Having bought it, I resolved not to gaze at the cute nautical themed fabrics and then tuck them away for another day but to prepare them for use with a quick whizz through the ‘laundry system’ before putting them on the cutting mat.  Thinking, ‘Do something quick!’ I found my bunting template and proceeded to cut out 24 triangles to make 12 flags.

I liked the result and decided to cut out another 24 triangles.  All six of the fabrics had prints  that only worked in one direction and it just wasn’t possible to squeeze the 4 triangles needed out of the remainder of each of the fat quarters.  So, and here I have to say I amazed myself, I stood at that cutting mat and made an instant decision!  The remaining fabric was quickly cut into 4″ squares, arranged into rows and then sewn together!  Phew!   Other decisions followed (fairly) rapidly – plain border, stripey binding, polyester wadding!  Phew!  The quilting took a bit of thought – classic, diagonal, cross hatching through the squares would look good but then I decided to emphasize the squares by quilting in the ditch.

The Hobbs Poly-Down wadding has quite a bit of ‘loft’ and I really like the way the quilting stitches sink into the layers and make the patchwork pattern puff up.

The finished baby quilt/play mat measures 31" x 34".

I’ve really enjoyed making this little quilt and matching bunting.  A quick FINISH without hours of  agonising over colour, placement of patches, and quilting patterns! Very satisfying! And all so spontaneous there wasn’t time to add them to my to-do list before they were done!

*Both quilt and bunting have been added to my Folksy shop page in the hope that someone might respond with a spontaneous purchase!*
